The Dalhousie Urban Garden Society (DUGS) is a student-run society aimed at making urban agriculture more accessible to students and the community.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide a safe, inclusive space for students, community members, student societies and academic programs to learn about the challenges and unique opportunities of urban gardening. Our efforts are directed at engaging and educating the university community and beyond on topics regarding urban gardening and food production alternatives through an experience-based, student volunteer-run campus urban garden project.

We make growing fun and accessible to folks of all experience levels and all interests, from flowers to herbs to roots veggies and leafy greens.

We also contribute to food security efforts by donating produce to the loaded ladle for their weekly food servings, as well as run an Emergency Food Bursary program, where we give away bursaries to Dalhousie and King’s students each month to help offset the rising costs of food, a major contributor to food insecurity, particularly among students.

What We've Achieved

  • Through our grocery bursary program, we have been able to give away over $4300 in grants to target food insecurity

  • We’ve facilitated dozens of online and in-person workshops on exciting food and growing-focused topics like mushroom foraging, beekeeping, sprouting seeds and making salves from flowers

  • We support garden start-up initiatives within the community

  • We have created a vibrant space within our community where everyone feels welcome regardless of their gardening background
