Hi! I am our External Coordinator, and a Ph.D. student at Dalhousie University in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. I am studying the environmental dynamics of Vibrio species bacteria in the ocean, in an attempt to increase food safety within the climate-change driven warming of the Northern Atlantic Ocean.

I am the head gardener of DUGS and a Master of Science Candidate in the Biology Department of Dalhousie. I have a passion for plants, forest ecology, and conservation. My project is investigating how forest dependent plant species of conservation concern are impacted by forestry operations and how non-native plant species are infiltrating Nova Scotia’s forest ecosystems.

So thrilled to be the summer intern for DUGS this season! Along with studying at Dalhousie, I am taking Ethnobotany at the University of Fairbanks and can guarantee that 90% of the waking hours of the day, I am thinking/eating/planning/or researching food (issues/problems/solutions) or plants! In addition to the garden, I work with DSUSO and Meal exchange, carrying over the vision shared with DUGS of advocating for a more food sovereign institution.

Hey! I am our Treasurer this year and a Biology Undergraduate Student trying to finish off his degree. I am also working on my Honours thesis concerning three at-risk landbird species here in Nova Scotia: the Canada Warbler, Rusty Blackbird and the Olive-sided Flycatcher. I hope to locate areas of high quality habitat for these species so that they can be better protected.

Hi there! I am the internal coordinator for DUGS this year. I’m currently going into my second year of Law at Dalhousie, with a BSc in Microbiology. This is my second year being involved with the garden and it has become my favourite place on campus. If you ever need time away from the chaos or just a few minutes of fresh air, definitely come visit!
